 About These Toads

Yellow-bellied fire belly toads (Bombina variegata) are hardy, semi-aquatic amphibians recognized for their striking yellow-and-black ventral patterning. These are captive bred, not wild collected, and adapt well to properly maintained captive environments.

Husbandry & Care

Enclosure:

A shallow paludarium or semi-aquatic setup works best. Provide both land areas and shallow water access at all times. Use smooth river rock, slate, cork bark, and live or artificial plants to create structure and cover.

Only dechlorinated or reverse-osmosis water. Maintain cleanliness with frequent partial water changes to ensure stable, healthy conditions.

Temperature:

Keep between 65–72°F (18–22°C). Avoid heat mats or heat lamps — typical room temperatures are ideal.

Lighting:

Low to moderate ambient or LED lighting is sufficient. UVB is optional but can be beneficial when paired with proper supplementation.

Substrate:

Use smooth, safe materials. Incorporate damp soil or coco coir in land areas to support plants and natural behaviors.

Feeding:

Feed a variety of small live insects such as pinhead crickets, small crickets, springtails, bean beetles, and fruit flies (for juveniles). All feeders should be gut-loaded and dusted with calcium (with D3 as needed) and multivitamins on a proper schedule.

Handling:

Handling should be limited. Their skin is sensitive and permeable, and they produce mild defensive toxins. Always wash hands before and after contact or use powder-free gloves when necessary.
