PNG Taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus canni)

Captive-Bred by Obscure Tails (2025)

The PNG Taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus canni) is one of the most iconic and formidable elapid snakes in the world. Native to Papua New Guinea, this subspecies of Coastal Taipan is renowned for its intelligence, speed, and highly potent venom. These animals are not only visually striking—with their smooth scales, alert posture, and commanding presence—but also represent the pinnacle of advanced venomous reptile keeping.

At Obscure Tails, we take pride in offering captive-bred PNG Taipans, ensuring healthier, well-established animals that are already accustomed to controlled environments. Captive breeding plays a critical role in reducing wild collection pressure while producing specimens that are generally more manageable compared to their wild-caught counterparts.

Natural History & Behavior

In the wild, PNG Taipans inhabit coastal forests, grasslands, and agricultural areas throughout Papua New Guinea. They are diurnal hunters, primarily feeding on small mammals, and are known for their precision striking and strong feeding response. Highly alert and reactive, they rely on speed and accuracy rather than prolonged confrontation.

These snakes demand respect, experience, and strict safety protocols. They are not defensive without reason, but their quickness and awareness make them unsuitable for inexperienced keepers.

Care Overview

Keeping Oxyuranus scutellatus canni requires advanced-level venomous reptile experience.

  • Enclosure: Secure, escape-proof enclosures with locking mechanisms are mandatory. Minimalistic setups are often preferred for safety and maintenance.
  • Temperature: Maintain a thermal gradient of ~78–85°F with a basking area up to 90°F.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity (50–70%) is ideal.
  • Feeding: Appropriately sized rodents; strong feeding response should always be anticipated.
  • Handling: No direct handling. Tools such as hooks, tubes, and shift boxes must be used at all times.
